Australian Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) Survey

The Australian NSP Survey is a cross-sectional study that has been conducted each year since 1995. The survey forms the basis of Australia's human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C surveillance among injecting drug users, and monitors behavioural indices of risk in addition to prevalence of infection.

Drug Policy Modelling Program (DPMP)

The DPMP is concerned with research and practice in illicit drug policy. DPMP focuses on enabling a more comprehensive approach to drug policy; exploring dynamic interactions between law enforcement, prevention, treatment and harm reduction. Drug Use Careers of Offenders (DUCO) Study

Examines the illegal drug using and criminal careers of participants in the Drug Use Careers of Offenders (DUCO) project. DUCO surveyed 2,135 adult male offenders who were incarcerated in prisons in Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory in mid 2001.

Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA)

DUMA seeks to measure drug use among those people who have been recently apprehended by police. Data from DUMA is used to examine issues such as the relationship between drugs and property and violent crime, monitor patterns of drug use across time, and help assess the need for drug treatment amongst the offender population.

The Burden of Disease and Injury in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples 2003

The first comprehensive assessment of the burden of disease of Indigenous Australians that provides details of the extent of premature mortality and disability estimated for over 170 disease and injury categories and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in remote and non-remote areas of Australia. It also presents estimates of the amount of disease and injury caused by 11 major risk factors. More importantly, it measures the Indigenous Health Gap, which is the difference between the observed burden of disease in Indigenous Australians and what it would have been if the same rates of burden of disease as in the total Australian population would have applied.

The Burden of Disease and Injury in Australia 2003
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
Provides a comprehensive assessment of the health status of Australians. The report measures mortality, disability, impairment, illness and injury arising from 176 diseases, injuries and risk. It also assesses the burden attributable to each of 14 major risk factors, and inequalities in the disease burden associated with socioeconomic disadvantage.
